Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Nasal obstruction is often caused by nasal valve issues. Functional rhinoplasty techniques strengthen the nasal wall to prevent collapse and improve breathing.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Rhinology

Background:

  • Nasal obstruction is frequently linked to nasal valve pathology.
  • Inspiratory collapse of the nasal sidewall is a key sign of nasal valve compromise.
  • Existing measures for nasal obstruction show weak correlation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review functional rhinoplasty techniques for nasal valve obstruction.
  • To discuss methods for increasing nasal valve opening and lateral nasal wall support.

Main Methods:

  • Review of functional rhinoplasty techniques.
  • Analysis of methods to prevent dynamic collapse of the nasal ala and sidewall.

Main Results:

  • Functional rhinoplasty aims to improve the nasal valve area.
  • Techniques focus on increasing valve size and lateral wall/ala support.
  • Evidence primarily comes from favorable observational studies.

Conclusions:

  • Functional rhinoplasty addresses nasal valve compromise effectively.
  • Surgical techniques aim to resolve dynamic inspiratory collapse.
  • Further research may explore objective outcome measures.
