Insights
Heart failure is a growing public health issue with poor outcomes. This review details current and emerging treatments for heart failure with systolic dysfunction and discusses challenges in managing heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- Pharmacology
Context:
- Heart failure (HF) presents a significant and escalating global health challenge.
- The condition is characterized by increasing incidence and poor patient prognosis.
- Effective management strategies are crucial for improving outcomes.
Purpose:
- To outline the established therapeutic strategies for chronic heart failure with left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
- To explore recent advancements and novel therapeutic targets in heart failure treatment.
- To address the less defined treatment landscape for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.
Summary:
- Current medical treatment for systolic heart failure involves well-codified therapeutic classes.
- Recent research focuses on optimizing existing therapies and repurposing drugs from other indications.
- The management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction remains an area requiring further definition, with ongoing studies for acute heart failure.
Impact:
- Provides a comprehensive overview of current and future heart failure therapies.
- Highlights critical areas for future research and clinical development.
- Aims to improve the clinical management and patient outcomes for various forms of heart failure.
Abstract:
Heart failure constitutes a major public health problem. Its incidence continues to grow and its prognosis remains poor. Therapeutic approach of chronic heart failure with left ventricular systolic dysfunction is well codified. Recommended medical treatment is presented with the description of the different therapeutic classes. Recent advances are discussed. New therapeutic targets are described. Optimization of recognized treatment and application to heart failure of drugs used for other indications are developed. Therapeutic approach of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is tackled but stays far less well defined. Many studies concerning treatment of acute heart failure are ongoing.
