Background:

  • Rosacea is a prevalent adult facial skin condition.
  • Inflammation is implicated in rosacea pathogenesis, but triggers remain unclear.
  • Previous research suggested microbial involvement in rosacea development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and localization of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) in facial skin biopsies of rosacea patients.
  • To determine if P. acnes plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of rosacea.

Main Methods:

  • Facial skin biopsies were collected from 82 rosacea patients and 25 controls.
  • Biopsies were stained using a P. acnes-specific monoclonal antibody (QUBPa3).
  • Presence of P. acnes was visualized in skin compartments.

Main Results:

  • P. acnes was detected in 8.5% (7 out of 82) of rosacea patients.
  • In positive cases, P. acnes appeared as either a biofilm (57%) or a microcolony (43%).
  • No P. acnes was detected in control subjects (data not shown, implied).

Conclusions:

  • Propionibacterium acnes is infrequently found in the skin of rosacea patients.
  • The findings suggest P. acnes does not play a major role in the pathogenesis of rosacea.
  • Further research may be needed to identify other initiating factors in rosacea.
