Summary

White matter integrity in the corpus callosum (CC) influences Trail Making Test (TMT) performance speed. However, these white matter variations do not explain the link between aging and TMT performance in healthy adults.

Background:

  • The Trail Making Test (TMT) is sensitive to age-related cognitive decline.
  • The structural basis for the association between TMT performance and age is not well understood.
  • White matter integrity is crucial for cognitive functions assessed by the TMT.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of white matter characteristics on the relationship between TMT performance and age.
  • To examine the role of the corpus callosum (CC) in age-related TMT performance differences.

Main Methods:

  • Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) was used to assess white matter characteristics.
  • Voxel-wise correlation analysis was performed on data from 86 healthy middle-aged adults.
  • The study examined fractional anisotropy (FA) in the CC in relation to TMT-A performance and age.

Main Results:

  • A significant negative association was found between FA in the CC body and TMT-A performance speed.
  • Age was significantly associated with TMT-A performance.
  • The association between age and TMT-A performance was not mediated or moderated by CC FA.

Conclusions:

  • Fast motor processing in the TMT is strongly dependent on individual white matter integrity of the CC.
  • Interindividual variations in CC white matter influence motor processing speed.
  • These variations do not account for the observed age-related differences in TMT performance.
