Mugwort pollen sensitization is linked to chronic urticaria (CU). This finding may explain why elimination diets, often avoiding mugwort-related foods, benefit CU patients.
Area of Science:
- Allergen immunotherapy
- Immunology
- Dermatology
Background:
- Mugwort pollen cross-reacts with common foods in elimination diets.
- Chronic urticaria (CU) treatment often involves dietary modifications.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between chronic urticaria and mugwort pollen sensitization.
- To understand the role of mugwort allergy in CU management.
Main Methods:
- Two case-control studies were conducted.
- Aeroallergen skin prick tests were used to compare sensitization between CU patients and controls (n=202).
Main Results:
- Patients with CU and allergic rhinitis were over twice as likely to be sensitized to mugwort (67% vs. 30%).
- Sensitization to ragweed, cat, rat, and mites also showed significant association with CU.
- CU patients exhibited more positive aeroallergen skin tests overall.
Conclusions:
- Mugwort pollen sensitization is associated with chronic urticaria.
- This association may explain the effectiveness of elimination diets in CU treatment.
