Summary

Selenium deficiency is common in kidney disease patients and may worsen health outcomes. Supplementation shows promise in improving immune function and reducing oxidative stress in these individuals.

  • Selenium (Se) is a vital trace element acting as a cofactor for selenoproteins involved in thyroid hormone metabolism, antioxidant defense, and immune function.
  • Se deficiency is linked to cardiovascular disease, infections, mortality, and is frequently observed in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
  • Hyposelenemia (low serum Se) and renal insufficiency are associated with increased risks of coronary heart disease mortality and all-cause mortality.

Purpose of the Study:
