Summary

Eating epilepsy, a specific seizure type, is more common in males and often begins in the second decade of life. Genetic and dietary factors may contribute to its high prevalence.

Background:

  • Eating epilepsy is a rare form of epilepsy.
  • Its prevalence and specific characteristics are not well-documented globally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical and electroencephalogram (EEG) features of patients with eating epilepsy.
  • To compare these features with a control group of patients with general epilepsy.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective study of 150 patients with eating seizures over 9 years in Sri Lanka.
  • Clinical and EEG data from 120 patients were analyzed and compared to 120 epilepsy controls.

Main Results:

  • Eating epilepsy showed a 3:1 male predominance, with onset typically in the second decade.
  • Family history was positive in 28.3%, and 21 siblings had eating seizures.
  • EEG revealed temporal lobe abnormalities in 71.6%; seizure types were partial or secondarily generalized.
  • Response to medication was similar to controls; clobazam showed utility.

Conclusions:

  • High prevalence of eating epilepsy in this series may be linked to genetic/ethnic factors and high-carbohydrate diets.
  • Further research into the specific etiology of eating epilepsy is warranted.
