The Availability Heuristic

A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare policy and patient rights
  • Hospital administration and professional development
  • Health services research

Context:

  • The 2002 Charter of Citizen Rights and Duties regarding Health and Healthcare aims to establish patient rights in Catalonia.
  • Limited data exists on hospital professionals' awareness and perception of these rights.
  • This study addresses the knowledge and perceived observance of the Rights Charter among hospital workers.

Purpose:

  • To assess the level of knowledge of the Rights Charter among hospital professionals.
  • To evaluate hospital professionals' perception of compliance with the Rights Charter.
  • To identify disparities in knowledge and perception based on professional and demographic characteristics.

Summary:

  • A multi-center study surveyed 963 hospital professionals in Catalonia regarding their knowledge and perception of patient rights.
  • Respondents knew 76.7% of rights and perceived 59.1% observance, with lower knowledge among non-care staff and critical perception from women and night shift workers.
  • Specific rights, such as those concerning genetic makeup and research, were less known and perceived as less respected.

Impact:

  • Findings highlight a gap in knowledge and perceived compliance with patient rights among hospital professionals.
  • The study underscores the need for targeted educational interventions and improved information dissemination strategies within hospitals.
  • Recommendations focus on developing and implementing effective methods to enhance awareness and adherence to the Charter Rights.
