Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Biomedical engineering

Background:

  • Total ankle joint replacement (TAR) emerged as an alternative to ankle arthrodesis in the 1970s.
  • TAR aims to maintain joint mobility, potentially reduce adjacent joint degeneration, and facilitate earlier weight-bearing.
  • Significant modifications in TAR device components have occurred since their inception.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the evolution and modifications of total ankle joint replacement (TAR) devices.
  • To highlight the benefits of TAR over ankle arthrodesis.

Main Methods:

  • Review of historical development and design changes in TAR implants.
  • Analysis of component variations and their impact on TAR outcomes.

Main Results:

  • TAR offers joint motion preservation and quicker weight-bearing compared to arthrodesis.
  • Ongoing modifications in TAR components aim to improve functional outcomes and longevity.

Conclusions:

  • Total ankle joint replacement provides a viable alternative to ankle fusion, preserving motion and function.
  • Continued innovation in TAR component design is crucial for enhancing patient recovery and long-term results.
