Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Radiology

Context:

  • Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are benign bone tumors.
  • Previous treatment outcomes for these tumors were variable.
  • A cohort of patients treated between 1978-1988 was available for follow-up.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the long-term outcomes of patients treated for osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma.
  • To assess the diagnostic accuracy of imaging modalities for these bone tumors.
  • To analyze treatment effectiveness and recurrence rates.

Summary:

  • A follow-up study included 20 patients with osteoid osteoma and 3 with osteoblastoma treated from 1978-1988.
  • Diagnosis was accurate in 87% using radiography, tomography, and bone scanning.
  • Intracapsular excision was the primary treatment; recurrence occurred in 3 patients. All 23 patients were asymptomatic at follow-up.
  • Histopathology showed no definitive differences between osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma.

Impact:

  • Demonstrates the efficacy of surgical excision for osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma.
  • Highlights the importance of advanced imaging in diagnosing these bone tumors.
  • Provides evidence for favorable long-term prognosis and patient-reported outcomes.
