Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify factors negatively influencing participation in population-based disease prevention programs within General Practice.
  • To determine if program type correlates with non-participation rates.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO) was conducted.
  • Studies published between 2000 and July 2012 were included.
  • Publications detailing non-participant characteristics or reasons for non-participation were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Twenty-four studies were included, covering vaccination and screening programs for various diseases.
  • Key factors associated with non-participation included lack of perceived personal relevance, younger age, higher social deprivation, and previous non-participation.
  • No significant differences in non-participation were found between vaccination, early detection screening, and risk assessment screening programs.
  • Recruitment strategies significantly impacted participation, with active, personalized approaches yielding higher rates than simple invitation letters.

Conclusions:

  • Tailoring strategies to engage younger individuals, those in deprived areas, and former non-participants is essential for improving program uptake.
  • Implementing more active and personalized recruitment methods can effectively increase participation in disease prevention programs.
