Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the utility of VR simulators in improving cardiac catheterization skills among cardiology trainees.
  • To compare the performance changes in trainees undergoing VR simulator training versus a control group.

Main Methods:

  • 27 cardiology trainees were randomized into a VR simulator group (n=12) or a control group (n=15).
  • Performance was assessed at baseline and 1 week post-intervention.
  • Linear regression analyzed the impact of simulator training based on baseline performance.

Main Results:

  • Technical performance significantly improved in the VR simulator group (P=0.008) compared to the control group (P=0.054).
  • The VR group demonstrated greater improvement in technical skills (P=0.04).
  • Lower baseline scores correlated with greater post-intervention score differences between groups (P<0.0001).

Conclusions:

  • Mentored VR simulation training effectively improves cardiac catheterization skills.
  • These skills are transferable to actual procedures in the catheterization laboratory.
  • Less proficient operators benefit more from VR simulator training.
