Summary

Alcohol abuse damages small intestine lining, causing reduced villus height. Abstinence partially reverses this damage, but ultrastructural changes and bacterial adhesion persist. Serum zinc levels decrease, while copper levels increase.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the morphological and ultrastructural changes in the small intestinal mucosa of alcoholic patients.
  • To assess the impact of short-term abstinence on these mucosal changes.
  • To evaluate serum mineral levels and alcohol consumption markers.

  • Biopsy of small intestinal mucosa from 11 alcoholic patients before and after 6 weeks of abstinence.
