Summary

Pediatric migraine patients showed normal immune cell levels overall. However, CD8(+) T-cell prevalence temporarily decreased during migraine attacks, regardless of migraine type.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of regulatory T cells (Tregs), CD4(+)/CD8(+) lymphocytes, and Th1/Th2 commitment in pediatric migraine patients.
  • To compare these immune parameters between ictal and interictal phases and with healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Recruitment of pediatric patients with various migraine subtypes (without aura, with aura, hemiplegic) during ictal and interictal phases.
  • Comparison of immune cell prevalence (Tregs, CD4(+), CD8(+)) and Th1/Th2 commitment against a control group of healthy children.
  • Analysis of potential associations between CD8(+) prevalence and clinical factors like gender, weight, onset, and duration.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in Tregs, CD4(+), or Th1/Th2 committed cells were found across groups.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric migraine does not appear to involve major systemic alterations in adaptive immunity.
  • A transient reduction in CD8(+) T-cell prevalence during migraine attacks is a notable finding, suggesting a temporary immune response specific to the ictal phase.
