Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Endoscopy
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Gastrointestinal polyps are common findings during endoscopic procedures.
  • Upper gastrointestinal polyps, while less frequent than colonic polyps, require careful management.
  • Data on the incidence and management of upper gastrointestinal polyps in India is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the incidence and characteristics of polyps in the upper gastrointestinal tract.
  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic polypectomy for upper gastrointestinal polyps.
  • To determine the histopathological types of retrieved polyps.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of nine cases of upper gastrointestinal polyps.
  • Endoscopic polypectomy performed for polyp retrieval.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Histopathological examination of all retrieved polyps.
  • Main Results:

    • Nine polyps were retrieved from the esophagus (1), stomach (7), and duodenum (1).
    • Presenting symptoms included dysphagia, obstructive jaundice, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding in four patients; five were incidental findings.
    • Histopathology revealed six adenomas, two hyperplastic polyps, and one inflammatory polyp. All were completely removed without complications.

    Conclusions:

    • Polyps frequently occur in the upper gastrointestinal tract in India.
    • Endoscopic electrosurgical removal is a safe and effective method for complete polyp retrieval.
    • Histopathological examination of completely retrieved polyps is crucial for diagnosis and management.
