Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate perceived total sleep time on schooldays (TSTS) and non-schooldays (TSTN) in a national sample of teenagers.
  • To determine the prevalence of sleep-initiating insomnia among adolescents aged 11-15.
  • To establish normative sleep data for this age group.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 9,251 children (aged 11-15) from the 2011 HBSC cross-national study.
  • Self-completion questionnaires administered in classrooms to assess sleep habits.
  • Calculation of TSTN-TSTS difference to estimate sleep deprivation; assessment of sleep-initiating insomnia based on ICSD-2 criteria.

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in TST was observed from age 11 to 15, both on schooldays (9h 26m to 7h 55m) and weekends (10h 17m to 9h 44m).
  • Sleep deprivation prevalence increased from 16.0% at age 11 to 40.5% at age 15.
  • The proportion of short sleepers (≤7 hours/night) rose from 2.6% at age 11 to 24.6% at age 15.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescent TST drastically decreases with age, creating a significant and escalating sleep debt.
  • This age-related decline in sleep highlights a critical public health concern for adolescent sleep health.
  • Findings underscore the need for interventions to address insufficient sleep in teenagers.
