Clopidogrel, an antiplatelet drug, can cause rare side effects. This report details a large spontaneous pectoral hematoma, a previously undocumented complication in an elderly woman undergoing clopidogrel therapy.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pharmacology
- Hematology
Background:
- Clopidogrel is a widely used oral antiplatelet agent for managing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances; serious adverse events like intracranial hemorrhage and neutropenia are rare.
- Spontaneous pectoral hematoma is not a previously documented side effect of clopidogrel.
Observation:
- A case study involving an elderly woman receiving clopidogrel therapy.
- The patient developed a large spontaneous pectoral hematoma.
Findings:
- This case represents the first reported instance of spontaneous pectoral hematoma associated with clopidogrel use.
- The event occurred despite the absence of trauma, suggesting a direct link to the antiplatelet medication.
Implications:
- Highlights a potential, previously unrecognized risk associated with clopidogrel therapy.
- Suggests the need for increased vigilance and consideration of this rare complication in patients presenting with similar symptoms.
- May inform future clinical practice guidelines regarding clopidogrel monitoring and patient education.
