Background:

  • Optimal risk factor control is essential for patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • A significant gap exists between ideal cardiovascular prevention practices and real-world application for these patient groups.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate current cardiovascular prevention strategies for PAD and CAD patients at a Brazilian university hospital.
  • To identify predictors associated with successful implementation of preventive measures.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 192 patients diagnosed with CAD or PAD.
  • Assessment of six key prevention goals: blood pressure targets, LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, smoking status, and regular aerobic exercise.

Main Results:

  • Patients achieved an average of 3.06 out of 6 prevention goals.
  • Significant percentages of patients met specific goals: 57.3% (systolic BP < 140 mmHg), 67.2% (diastolic BP < 90 mmHg), 40.1% (LDL < 100 mg/dL), 27.6% (HDL targets), 88.5% (non-smoking), and 25% (aerobic exercise).
  • Male gender, hospitalization, CAD diagnosis, patient awareness of treatment rationale, and β-blocker prescription were independent predictors of achieving more prevention goals.

Conclusions:

  • Cardiovascular prevention for PAD and CAD patients in a university hospital setting falls short of ideal standards.
  • Enhanced patient education and awareness initiatives are recommended to improve the efficacy of preventive interventions.
