Background:

Internet-based randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are growing, offering potential for increased equity, generalizability, and cost reduction.
Limited understanding exists regarding participant attitudes and experiences in online trials compared to traditional methods.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore participant experiences and perspectives in an Internet-based RCT.
To assess attitudes towards online medical research and future participation intentions.

Main Methods:

An online survey was distributed to all English-speaking participants of a completed Internet RCT.
The survey collected data on participant motivations, experiences, and preferences for online research.

Main Results:

A 33% response rate (416 participants) was achieved.
Key motivations included personal interest, ease of participation, and altruism.
Participants valued the flexibility and convenience of online trials but noted a lack of connectedness and understanding as a disadvantage.
69% preferred future participation in Internet-based research.

Conclusions:

Participants favor Internet-based trials for their convenience and flexibility.
Addressing the trade-off between convenience and connectedness is crucial for improving acceptability.
Strategies enhancing support and understanding in online trials are recommended.
