Summary

Osteoporosis leads to decreased bone density, but this study found no changes in bone mineral element concentrations. Bone density loss in osteoporosis is linked to reduced bone mass, not altered mineral composition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if bone mineral loss in osteoporosis is due to reduced bone mass or altered elemental concentrations in bone tissue.
  • To determine the concentration of various elements in the cortical bone of osteoporotic and control subjects.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of iliac crest bone biopsies from 33 subjects (12 controls, 21 with severe osteoporosis).
  • Quantification of calcium and phosphorus using energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis and ICP-OES.
  • Measurement of Na, K, Mg, Cu, Zn, Fe, Sr, Al, B, and Si via ICP-OES.
