Summary

Postoperative complications after radial head arthroplasty are linked to radiographic findings and patient symptoms. Half of implants showed radiographic issues by nine months, highlighting the need for careful monitoring.

  • 258 radial head implants in 244 patients were analyzed; 84.9% were unipolar.
  • Common indications were trauma (94%).
  • Radiographic abnormalities included heterotopic ossification (38.0%), osteoarthritis (27.9%), and loosening (19.8%).
  • 62 second surgeries were performed, primarily for heterotopic ossification (53.2%) and synovectomy/capsulectomy (43.5%).
  • A significant association was found between radiographic complications and patient symptoms (p < 0.05).
  • No association was found between complications and age, sex, side, or arthroplasty type.

Conclusions:

  • A positive association exists between radiographic findings and patient symptoms regarding postoperative complications after radial head arthroplasty.
  • Fifty percent of implants demonstrated radiographic complications by nine months post-surgery.
