Classification of Illness01:17

Classification of Illness

The meaning of illness is individualized to each person who experiences an alteration in health. In contrast, disease is a medical term indicating a pathological change in the structure and function of the body or mind. It is a condition that has specific symptoms and boundaries.
An illness is a response to a disease in which the person's level of functioning is changed compared with a previous level. The general classification of illness includes acute and chronic.
Acute illness is severe and...
Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness, disability,...

Summary

This study found that the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ) needs specific subscales for systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. These new subscales can help assess illness behaviors related to quality of life in scleroderma.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology and immunology
  • Psychosomatic medicine
  • Health psychology

Background:

  • Illness behaviors significantly impact quality of life in systemic sclerosis (SSc), affecting pain and depression.
  • Accurate assessment of illness behavior is crucial and relies on psychometrically sound self-report measures.
  • The Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ) is widely used, but its subscale structure lacks consensus, particularly in SSc.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the validity of the Illness Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ) in a cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
  • To determine an appropriate factor structure for the IBQ within the SSc population.
  • To establish reliable subscales for assessing illness behaviors in SSc.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 278 SSc patients completed the IBQ.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test previously established factor solutions.
  • Exploratory factor analysis was employed to develop SSc-specific subscales.

Main Results:

  • Existing IBQ structural models were not supported in SSc patients.
  • Exploratory factor analysis identified a novel 5-subscale structure specific to SSc.
  • The new subscales showed independence from disease severity but correlated with fatigue, pain, disability, social support, and mental health.

Conclusions:

  • The developed SSc-specific IBQ subscales are recommended for clinical use.
  • These subscales can effectively capture clinically relevant illness behaviors in systemic sclerosis.
  • The findings support the utility of tailored instruments for understanding patient experiences in SSc.
