Summary

Digoxin intoxication remains a concern, especially in elderly females. Gastrointestinal complaints are the most frequent symptom, and mortality rates have decreased.

  • To analyze a case series of digoxin intoxication in the modern era.
  • To identify demographic, clinical, and laboratory characteristics of patients with digoxin intoxication.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 71 patients hospitalized with confirmed digoxin intoxication (serum digoxin > 2.0 ng/mL).
  • Data collected included demographics, digoxin use, comorbidities, concurrent medications, and ECG findings.

Main Results:

  • Over half of patients (53.5%) experienced heart failure symptoms.
  • The majority of patients (64%) were over 75 years old, and 67% were female.
  • Females showed higher rates of atrial fibrillation, hypertension, and gastrointestinal complaints.

Conclusions:

  • Mortality rates for digoxin intoxication have decreased.
  • Gastrointestinal complaints are the most prevalent symptom in digoxin intoxication cases.
