Summary

Cleft sternum is a rare congenital defect where the sternal bone fails to fuse. This case report details an 8-year-old female treated successfully with primary closure for a complete sternal cleft.

Background:

Cleft sternum is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from incomplete fusion of the sternal bones.
The exact etiology remains unclear, though it is more prevalent in females and can be associated with Cantrell's pentalogy.
Defects can range from partial to complete sternal absence.

Observation:

An 8-year-old female presented with a complete cleft sternum.
Diagnosis was confirmed using chest radiography and computed tomography.
This represents one of only 24 reported cases of isolated complete cleft sternum.

Findings:

The patient's complete cleft sternum was successfully treated with primary surgical closure.
Treatment options for cleft sternum vary, including primary repair and the use of grafts.
