Summary

Peripancreatic schwannomas, tumors near the pancreas, are often benign and accurately diagnosed with imaging. Complete surgical resection ensures an excellent prognosis with no recurrence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To define the clinicopathologic features of peripancreatic schwannoma.
  • To improve the diagnosis and treatment of peripancreatic schwannoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 17 patients with pathologically proven peripancreatic schwannoma.
  • Data collected on patient demographics, tumor characteristics, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Tumor locations varied, including pancreatic head, superior mesenteric, celiac, and splenic plexuses.
  • Vague abdominal pain and abdominal mass were the most common symptoms.
  • Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) achieved a 70.6% preoperative diagnostic accuracy.
  • 16 patients underwent total resection with no noted recurrences; 3 had concomitant pancreatectomy.

Conclusions:

  • Most peripancreatic schwannomas are benign.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis is achievable with characteristic imaging findings.
  • Total resection is crucial for successful treatment and long-term prognosis, with no recurrences observed after complete removal.
