The Gamma Nail (TGN) showed longer surgery times, more blood loss, and higher complication rates than the Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) for intertrochanteric fractures. PFNA is recommended for elderly and osteoporotic patients.

An Intramedullary Locking Nail for Standardized Fixation of Femur Osteotomies to Analyze Normal and Defective Bone Healing in Mice

  • Surgical duration, blood loss, and complication incidence were analyzed.
  • Main Results:

    • The TGN group had significantly longer operative times (62 min vs. 45 min, p=0.04) and greater blood loss (285 ml vs. 226 ml, p=0.03) compared to the PFNA group.
    • A higher rate of complications was observed in the TGN group (p=0.01).
    • Complications in the TGN group were linked to longer operative times and increased blood loss, potentially due to reaming, and were more frequent in elderly patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) is recommended for elderly and osteoporotic patients undergoing treatment for intertrochanteric fractures.
    • The Gamma Nail (TGN) may be more suitable for severely displaced fractures in patients with better bone density.
    • Device choice should consider patient-specific factors like age, bone quality, and fracture pattern.
