Summary

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are significantly linked to depression in men. Prostatic symptom scores can aid in screening for depression, highlighting the importance of LUTS treatment for mental health.

Background:

Depression is implicated in the pathogenesis of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
The relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and depression requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the association between LUTS and depression in men using validated questionnaires.
To determine if prostatic symptoms can be utilized in screening for depression.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 673 healthy male workers completed the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI).
Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression, adjusting for total testosterone and age.

Main Results:

A significant positive association was found between IPSS scores and BDI scores.
Higher IPSS scores correlated with increased odds of mild, moderate-to-severe, and severe depression.

Conclusions:

LUTS are significantly associated with depression in healthy men.
Effective treatment of LUTS may be crucial for improving the mental health of men, particularly older individuals.
