Summary

A novel vacuum-assisted tissue resection device (VRD) shows feasibility for canine intervertebral disc fenestration. This device is as effective as manual methods, offering enhanced safety features for nucleus pulposus removal.

  • Assessment of fenestration effectiveness by calculating the ratio of remaining nuclear weight to total nuclear volume; lower ratios indicate greater nucleus pulposus removal.
  • Main Results:

    • Both manual and VRD fenestration significantly reduced the remaining nuclear weight-to-volume ratio compared to controls (P < .001).
    • The VRD group showed a trend towards improved nucleus pulposus removal (ratio 0.23 ± 0.09) compared to manual fenestration (0.30 ± 0.10), though not statistically significant (P = .069).
    • Fenestration at lower lumbar levels (L5-L6, L6-L7) was technically more challenging and resulted in higher residual nuclear ratios compared to cranial levels (L4-L5) (P = .026 and P = .004, respectively).

    Conclusions:

    • The vacuum-assisted tissue resection device (VRD) is a feasible instrument for canine intervertebral disc fenestration.
    • The VRD demonstrates comparable effectiveness to manual fenestration.
    • The VRD offers potential advantages in safety features during the fenestration procedure.
