Working memory performance is influenced by both hippocampal volume and NTSR1 gene variations. The NTSR1 gene modulates the relationship between hippocampal structure and working memory capacity in healthy individuals.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Genetics
- Cognitive Psychology
Background:
- Working memory (WM) is crucial for cognitive function.
- Dopamine (DA) related genes, including NTSR1, are linked to WM.
- NTSR1 is expressed in the hippocampus, vital for WM.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the combined effects of NTSR1 gene polymorphism and hippocampal morphology on WM performance.
- To explore gene-environment interactions in cognitive neuroscience.
Main Methods:
- 330 healthy Chinese college students participated.
- WM performance assessed using a 2-back task.
- Structural MRI used for hippocampal volume analysis; NTSR1 C/T polymorphism (rs4334545) genotyped.
Main Results:
- Significant interaction found between NTSR1 genotype and hippocampal volume (left and right) on WM performance.
- Hippocampal volume correlated with WM scores in NTSR1 T-allele carriers, but not CC homozygotes.
- NTSR1 gene variation modulates the brain structure-cognition link.
Conclusions:
- The association between hippocampal structure and WM performance is influenced by NTSR1 gene variations.
- Future brain-behavior studies should incorporate genetic factors.
- Highlights the importance of gene-gene and gene-environment interactions in understanding cognitive abilities.
