Emergency department (ED) employees showed improved knowledge after a workplace violence (WPV) educational program. Web-based learning achieved similar results to hybrid training, highlighting its effectiveness for ED staff.
Area of Science:
- Healthcare Education
- Occupational Safety
- Emergency Medicine
Background:
- Workplace violence (WPV) poses a significant risk to emergency department (ED) employees.
- There is a documented need for improved ED staff preparedness in preventing, managing, and recovering from WPV.
- Existing training programs may not adequately address the unique challenges faced in ED settings.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the learning outcomes of ED employees participating in a 4-unit WPV educational program.
- To compare the effectiveness of web-based learning versus a hybrid (web-based and classroom) approach for WPV education.
- To assess the impact of the educational program on employee knowledge regarding WPV.
Main Methods:
- A quasi-experimental study involving 315 ED employees across three departments.
- A 4-unit educational program with Units 1-3 delivered via web-based modules (pretest-posttest) and Unit 4 as a classroom-based application session.
- Paired samples t-tests were used to analyze knowledge attainment.
Main Results:
- A statistically significant increase in knowledge attainment was observed among participants following the WPV educational program (p < 0.001).
- No significant difference in knowledge gain was found between employees who completed only the web-based learning and those who underwent the hybrid program (p = 0.136).
- The educational intervention demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing employee understanding of WPV.
Conclusions:
- A comprehensive workplace violence educational program can significantly improve knowledge among ED employees.
- Web-based learning modules are an effective and potentially equivalent alternative to hybrid training for WPV education in ED settings.
- Implementing structured WPV training is crucial for enhancing ED staff safety and preparedness.
