Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques III

Regular exercise and meditation serve as essential tools in managing stress and promoting physical and mental well-being.
The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Psychological Responses to Stress01:20

Psychological Responses to Stress

Psychological responses to stress encompass the various cognitive and emotional reactions individuals experience when faced with challenging or threatening situations, such as a job loss. Prolonged exposure to stressors can disturb emotional balance, increasing negative emotions (e.g., anxiety and sadness) and diminishing positive emotions (e.g., joy and satisfaction). These persistent emotional shifts are associated with an increased risk of both physical illness and mental health issues, such...

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Psychology
  • Evidence-based Medicine

Background:

  • Psoriasis is an incurable chronic skin condition.
  • Psoriasis significantly impacts patients' quality of life and psychological well-being.
  • A subset of patients report stress exacerbates their psoriasis symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review the evidence on stress-reduction interventions for psoriasis.
  • To assess the impact of these interventions on physical psoriasis severity and psychological distress.
  • To evaluate effects on quality of life in individuals with psoriasis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature search across EMBASE, MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, SIGLE, and PsychInfo.
  • Inclusion of 10 trials from an initial pool of 730 identified studies.
  • Analysis of outcomes including psoriasis severity, psychological distress, and quality of life.

Main Results:

  • Three trials reported significant differences in psoriasis outcomes (p < 0.05).
  • Three of seven studies found significant improvements in psychological outcomes (p < 0.05).
  • One of three trials showed a significant quality of life improvement (p < 0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence quality is low, making it insufficient to determine effectiveness.
  • Further high-quality, multidisciplinary research is recommended.
  • Nine recommendations for future research are proposed.
