Color Vision01:24

Color Vision

Color perception begins in the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. Two main theories explain how colors are seen: the trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory. The trichromatic theory, proposed by Thomas Young in 1802 and extended by Hermann von Helmholtz in 1852, suggests that color vision is based on three types of cone receptors in the retina. These cones are sensitive to different but overlapping ranges of wavelengths corresponding to red, blue, and green.
Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways01:22

Photoreceptors and Visual Pathways

At the molecular level, visual signals trigger transformations in photopigment molecules, resulting in changes in the photoreceptor cell's membrane potential. The photon's energy level is denoted by its wavelength, with each specific wavelength of visible light associated with a distinct color. The spectral range of visible light, classified as electromagnetic radiation, spans from 380 to 720 nm. Electromagnetic radiation wavelengths exceeding 720 nm fall under the infrared category, whereas...
Fatigue01:21

Fatigue

Fatigue occurs when materials rupture under repeated or fluctuating loads, even at stress levels far below their static breaking strength. It typically results in brittle failure, even for ductile materials. It is a critical consideration in designing machines and structural components subjected to repetitive or varying loads. The nature of these loadings can range from fluctuating loads like unbalanced pump impellers causing vibrations to repeatedly bending a thin steel rod wire back and forth...

Summary
This summary is machine-generated.

Continuous task performance leads to mental fatigue, impairing attention. This study found mental fatigue reduces the ability to ignore distractions, impacting focus and accuracy during demanding tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Mental fatigue arises from sustained cognitive effort.
  • Fatigue can impair attention, focus, and increase distractibility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between mental fatigue and attention-related changes.
  • To examine how prolonged task performance affects event-related potentials (ERPs) and cognitive control.

Main Methods:

  • 17 healthy volunteers performed an adapted Eriksen flanker task for two hours.
  • Electroencephalography (EEG), reaction times, and accuracy were recorded.
  • Target and flanker sizes were manipulated to differentiate processing of relevant and irrelevant information.

Main Results:

  • Event-related potential (ERP) effects related to target processing remained stable.
  • ERP effects associated with processing irrelevant information (flankers) diminished over time.
  • Behaviorally, participants showed increased reliance on irrelevant information, leading to reduced accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • Mental fatigue impairs the ability to suppress irrelevant information.
  • Sustained cognitive tasks can lead to attention deficits due to mental fatigue.
  • This study highlights the neural and behavioral consequences of mental fatigue on attentional control.
