Rheumatic Heart Disease II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

The key clinical manifestations of Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) include several distinct cardiac symptoms.Carditis, a hallmark of acute rheumatic fever, involves inflammation of the heart's endocardium, myocardium, and pericardium. Chronic RHD often results from recurrent episodes of carditis. Its symptoms include the following:Murmurs are caused by valvular damage, especially to the mitral and aortic valves. Mitral stenosis or regurgitation is common, with characteristic heart murmurs...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Rheumatology
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease primarily affecting synovial joints.
  • The potential impact of RA on auditory function remains debated, with unclear etiopathogenesis.
  • Evidence suggests RA may involve the ossicles' synovial joints, potentially affecting hearing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of Rheumatoid Arthritis on auditory function.
  • To observe changes in hearing among RA patients compared to controls.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 25 patients diagnosed with classical or definite Rheumatoid Arthritis.
  • A control group of 16 healthy individuals was recruited.
  • Patients with pre-existing ear conditions were excluded from the study.

Main Results:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis may lead to conductive hearing loss.
  • Abnormal otoadmittance was observed in RA patients.
  • Sensorineural hearing loss can also be associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Conclusions:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis can adversely affect auditory function.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the precise mechanisms linking RA and hearing impairment.
