Summary

Antrochoanal polyps, often solitary growths from the maxillary sinus, show a significant association with allergies. This study found over half of patients with these polyps also had allergic conditions, similar to other sinonasal polyps.

  • Antrochoanal polyps are solitary growths originating from the maxillary antrum.
  • The etiology of antrochoanal polyps is not fully understood, with allergy being a suspected factor.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between antrochoanal polyps and allergy.
  • To compare allergic markers in patients with antrochoanal polyps versus sinonasal polyps.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluation of 24 cases of antrochoanal polyps and comparison with 20 cases of sinonasal polyps.
  • Assessment included nasal smear cytology, serum total IgE, and polyp fluid IgE levels.

Main Results:

  • Allergic conditions were identified in 52.38% of patients with antrochoanal polyps.
  • The clinical presentation of antrochoanal polyps was not significantly different from other sinonasal polyps.
