Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...

Urologic Endoscopic Procedure: Cystoscopic Examination

Meaning of Cystoscopic Examination:Cystoscopy is an essential diagnostic tool in urology that is used to assess the structure and function of the genitourinary system. It provides a direct view of the urethra, bladder, and, in some cases, the ureteral openings. This procedure helps detect structural abnormalities, infections, cancers, and blockages in the urinary tract. There are two types of cystoscopy:Flexible cystoscopy is commonly performed in outpatient settings due to its less invasive...

Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.

Summary

A rare, large dentigerous cyst in a young boy's maxilla was successfully removed. Enucleation via the Caldwell-Luc approach prevented complications like oroantral fistula and sinusitis.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pediatric Dentistry

Background:

  • Dentigerous cysts are typically found in the mandible of middle-aged individuals.
  • Large maxillary dentigerous cysts in children are exceptionally rare.
  • Neglect can lead to significant disfigurement and complications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of a huge maxillary dentigerous cyst in a pediatric patient.
  • To discuss the management challenges and surgical approach for such a large cyst.
  • To highlight the importance of timely diagnosis and intervention.

Main Methods:

  • Surgical enucleation of the dentigerous cyst using the Caldwell-Luc approach.
  • Histopathological examination of the cyst lining.

  • Assessment of the cyst's impact on surrounding structures.
  • Main Results:

    • Complete removal of the massive maxillary dentigerous cyst was achieved.
    • The Caldwell-Luc approach successfully averted potential oroantral fistula and sinusitis.
    • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a dentigerous cyst.

    Conclusions:

    • Enucleation via the Caldwell-Luc approach is a viable option for large maxillary dentigerous cysts in children when marsupialization is not feasible.
    • Prompt surgical intervention is crucial to prevent severe disfigurement and complications.
    • This case underscores the importance of considering rare presentations in pediatric dentistry.
