Summary

Foreign body ingestion is a common issue in all ages. Endoscopic removal is highly successful for ingested foreign bodies, with surgery rarely needed, ensuring no mortality in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the characteristics and management outcomes of patients with ingested foreign bodies.
  • To identify common foreign body types and their locations in different age groups.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 152 patients (104 children, 48 adults) admitted with foreign body ingestion.
  • Radiological examination for localization, followed by endoscopic or surgical removal.
  • Analysis of patient demographics, foreign body type, location, symptoms, and management outcomes.

Main Results:

  • History of ingestion was the most common symptom.
  • Blunt foreign bodies were more prevalent in children, while meat with bone was common in adults.
  • Endoscopic removal was successful in 151 out of 152 cases; one case required open surgery.
  • Retropharyngeal abscesses were associated with sharp foreign bodies in two cases.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic removal is a safe and highly effective treatment for most ingested foreign bodies.
  • Age-specific patterns exist for foreign body types and impaction sites.
  • Prompt endoscopic intervention minimizes morbidity and mortality associated with foreign body ingestion.
