Office work leads to prolonged sitting, reducing lumbar muscle activation and increasing passive structure load. This may contribute to deconditioning and low back pain in office workers.
Area of Science:
- Biomechanics
- Occupational Health
- Spinal Physiology
Background:
- Low back pain is prevalent among office workers.
- Limited data exists on lumbar spine posture and muscle activity during prolonged office tasks.
Purpose of the Study:
- To measure lumbar spine posture and surface electromyography (sEMG) during office work.
- To enhance understanding of lumbar spine conditions in office environments.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional field study involving 13 volunteers over 2 hours of typical office work.
- Synchronized portable sEMG and posture measurement devices used.
- Statistical analysis to correlate lumbar spine posture and sEMG.
Main Results:
- Sedentary behavior dominated office work (82%); erect postures were minimal (5%).
- Lumbar muscle sEMG was task-dependent and strongly correlated with posture (P < .01).
- Increased lumbar flexion correlated with decreased muscle activation; ~30% of sitting involved minimal/no muscle activation.
Conclusions:
- Low lumbar muscle activation during sitting shifts load to passive spinal structures (ligaments, discs).
- Prolonged low activation may lead to spinal deconditioning.
- This deconditioning is a potential factor contributing to low back pain in office workers.
