This study compared two dimensional personality assessments for borderline personality organization (BPO). While instruments showed limited correlation, both aligned with clinical history, aiding BPO assessment and treatment.
Area of Science:
- Psychiatry
- Psychology
- Personality Disorders
Background:
- The categorical diagnosis of personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), is debated.
- This study investigates Kernberg's borderline personality organization (BPO) as a dimensional construct.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore dimensional personality assessment for BPO.
- To test the convergence of the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP-200) on BPO.
Main Methods:
- Assessed BPO using TCI and SWAP-200 in 34 BPO subjects and 34 matched controls.
- Compared TCI profiles of BPO subjects with controls.
- Correlated TCI and SWAP-200 profiles with each other and clinical data.
Main Results:
- BPO subjects exhibited higher harm avoidance and lower self-directedness on the TCI.
- SWAP-200 indicated a schizotypal configuration and histrionic/schizoid traits.
- Limited correlation was found between TCI and SWAP-200.
Conclusions:
- Both instruments correlated significantly with the clinical history of BPO subjects.
- Findings suggest implications for BPO assessment and its relation to other mental disorders.
- Understanding BPO's dimensional characteristics can enhance clinical management and therapeutic strategies.
