Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance and survival rates of Riata and Riata ST leads.
  • To compare Riata lead performance with historical Quattro Secure lead data.
  • To investigate the incidence and impact of externalized conductors (ECs) in Riata leads.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective multicenter study involving 7 centers.
  • Inclusion of 1081 adult patients implanted with Riata or Riata ST leads between 2002 and 2010.
  • Comparison with data from an earlier study of Quattro Secure leads.

Main Results:

  • Riata leads (8.0%) exhibited a higher failure rate than Riata ST leads (1.6%).
  • Externalized conductors (ECs) were found in 32% of Riata leads, with 27% of these malfunctioning.
  • Riata leads demonstrated significantly lower overall and malfunction-free survival compared to Quattro leads.

Conclusions:

  • Riata leads, particularly those with externalized conductors, have suboptimal survival rates.
  • Systematic fluoroscopic screening is recommended for patients with Riata leads to detect externalized conductors.
  • While Riata ST leads showed better initial results, their shorter follow-up duration warrants continued monitoring.
