Basic Plant Anatomy: Roots, Stems, and Leaves

The primary organs of vascular plants are roots, stems, and leaves, but these structures can be highly variable, adapted for the specific needs and environment of different plant species.
Water and Mineral Acquisition02:34

Water and Mineral Acquisition

Specialized tissues in plant roots have evolved to capture water, minerals, and some ions from the soil. Roots exhibit a variety of branching patterns that facilitate this process. The outermost root cells have specialized structures called root hairs that increase the root surface, thus increasing soil contact. Water can passively cross into roots, as the concentration of water in the soil is higher than that of the root tissue. Minerals, in contrast, are actively transported into root cells.

  • Plant Biology
  • Genomics
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Root hairs are crucial for plant nutrient and water uptake.
  • Root hairs are a model system for studying plant cell morphogenesis.
  • The growing volume of root hair research necessitates organized data access.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To create a comprehensive, Web-based database for root hair genomics.
  • To facilitate research by systematically collecting and presenting available information.
  • To provide a centralized resource for root hair biology.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a curated, searchable, Web-based database (iRootHair).
  • Integration of bioinformatics tools for sequence identification and annotation.
  • Inclusion of data on 153 root hair-related genes and their orthologs.

Main Results:

  • The iRootHair database is now available online.
  • It contains information on 153 genes across dicots and monocots.
  • The database is structured into searchable sections on genes, formation, mutants, and references.

Conclusions:

  • iRootHair serves as a unique, integrated resource for root hair research.
  • The database centralizes and organizes extensive genomics data.
  • It is freely accessible and expandable for future research needs.
