Psychiatric disorders do not affect tolerance to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) titration for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This study found no significant difference in CPAP tolerance between patients with and without psychiatric conditions.
Area of Science:
- Sleep Medicine
- Psychiatry
- Pulmonology
Background:
- Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is common and linked to serious health issues.
- Many OSA patients also have psychiatric disorders.
- The impact of psychiatric conditions on CPAP tolerance is unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine if psychiatric disorders prevent patients from tolerating CPAP titration for OSA.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective chart review of 284 patients at a VA hospital.
- Identified 143 OSA patients who underwent CPAP titration.
- Compared prevalence of psychiatric disorders in CPAP-tolerant vs. intolerant groups using chi-squared test.
Main Results:
- 33.6% of patients with psychiatric disorders tolerated CPAP titration.
- 33.3% of patients with psychiatric disorders did not tolerate CPAP titration.
- No statistically significant difference in CPAP tolerance based on psychiatric disorder presence (P = 0.82).
Conclusions:
- Psychiatric disorders do not appear to preclude CPAP titration tolerance in OSA patients.
- Limitations include a male-dominated population, exclusion of mild OSA, and lack of data on psychiatric symptom control.
