Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients frequently experience complex visual disturbances, impacting object recognition and spatial awareness. These visual impairments correlate with dementia severity and may stem from neuropathology in the brain's visual cortex.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and nature of complex visual disturbances in community-based Alzheimer's disease patients.
  • To compare visual task performance between AD patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated 30 AD patients and 30 controls on 7 complex visual tasks.
  • Assessed visual acuity, color recognition, object evaluation, face recognition, spatial localization, and figure analysis.

  • 43% of AD patients reported complex visual complaints.
