ProFile Vortex instruments show a very low fracture risk when used once by dental students. Single clinical use does not affect the metallurgical properties or phase transformation of these Nickel-Titanium files.

Background:

  • Assessing the durability and potential defects of ProFile Vortex instruments during clinical use is crucial for endodontic safety.
  • Understanding the metallurgical characteristics of Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) rotary files informs their performance and longevity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence and types of defects in ProFile Vortex instruments after single clinical use by undergraduate dental students.
  • To examine the metallurgical properties of unused versus clinically used Vortex instruments.

Main Methods:

  • 2,203 ProFile Vortex instruments were collected after single use and examined for defects under stereomicroscopy.
  • Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and Vickers hardness testing were employed to analyze instrument characteristics.

Main Results:

  • Only 1 out of 2,203 instruments fractured, attributed to shear stress and helix unwinding.
  • Blunt apices were observed in 3.9% of used files.
  • Metallurgical analyses revealed no significant differences in phase transformation or microhardness between unused and single-use files.

Conclusions:

  • The risk of ProFile Vortex instrument fracture is minimal with single use by dental students.
  • Single clinical use did not adversely affect the phase transformation or structural integrity of the NiTi files.
  • ProFile Vortex instruments maintain their austenite structure at room temperature after single clinical use.
