Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess self-reported practices and attitudes of pediatric providers regarding concussion diagnosis and management.
  • To identify barriers and needs for improving concussion care in a pediatric network.

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to pediatric primary care and emergency medicine providers.
  • The survey queried provider practices, attitudes, and perceived barriers to concussion education.

Main Results:

  • A 53% response rate (145/276) was achieved. 91% of respondents had treated concussion patients recently.
  • Inadequate training (16%) and time (15%) were key barriers to educating families.
  • 96-100% of providers without specific concussion tools or instructions found them helpful.

Conclusions:

  • Pediatric providers manage concussions but may lack sufficient training and infrastructure.
  • Improved provider education, decision support tools, and patient information are crucial for standardizing concussion care.
