Summary

Opal self-ligating brackets (SLBs) save chairside time compared to manually ligating brackets (MLBs). However, SLBs showed more bond failures, breakages, and staining, potentially negating time savings.

Area of Science:

  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Self-ligating brackets (SLBs) are increasingly used in orthodontics.
  • Evaluating new bracket systems like Opal SLBs against conventional methods is crucial for clinical practice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the clinical efficiency of Opal self-ligating brackets (SLBs) with conventional metal manually ligating brackets (MLBs).
  • To assess chairside time, appliance efficiency, bond failures, breakages, and staining between the two bracket systems.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving seven patients per group (Opal SLBs vs. MBT MLBs).
  • Standard light curing bonding methods were employed for both groups.
  • Chairside time, appliance efficiency (using PAR scores), and bond failures were evaluated.
  • Bracket staining and breakages were also observed for SLBs.

Main Results:

  • Opal SLBs demonstrated significant chairside time savings.
  • No significant difference in appliance efficiency (PAR scores) was found between SLBs and MLBs.
  • Bond failures, breakages, and staining were exclusively observed in the Opal SLB group.

Conclusions:

  • While Opal SLBs offer chairside time advantages, their higher incidence of bond failures, breakages, and staining may offset these benefits.
  • Further research is needed to address the durability and reliability of Opal SLBs.
