Background:

  • Continuing medical education (CME) is a potential strategy for enhancing healthcare quality and reducing disease management costs.
  • The effectiveness of CME for general practitioners (GPs) in improving asthma management requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a one-year CME/continuing professional development (CPD) course for GPs.
  • To assess improvements in knowledge and compliance with Asthma and Respiratory Illness Association (ARIA) and Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines.
  • To analyze the impact on asthma management practices.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty GPs were randomized into a CME/CPD group (five residential, four distance-learning events) or a control group.
  • Knowledge was assessed via questionnaires post-training.
  • Prescription data and hospitalization rates were analyzed pre- and post-training.

Main Results:

  • Training significantly improved knowledge (p < 0.001), with a 13% increase in correct answers.
  • Pharmaceutical costs decreased (trained GPs +0.5% vs. controls +18.8%).
  • Diagnostic measures, such as spirometry, increased by 63.4% (p < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Educational interventions positively impacted GP knowledge and daily practice in asthma management.
  • Long-term studies with larger populations are necessary to validate CME effectiveness on physician behavior.
  • Optimal formats for CME in asthma management require further research.
