    Background:

    • Chemodectomas, rare neuroendocrine tumors, originate from paraganglia.
    • This study analyzes 17 cases managed at University College Hospital, Ibadan.

    Observation:

    • Carotid body tumors (48%) and glomus jugulare (36%) were the most frequent types.
    • These tumors predominantly affected younger individuals with equal sex distribution.
    • Subglottic, abdominal, and multicentric tumors were also observed.

    Findings:

    • Operative mortality was exclusively associated with carotid body tumors (50% incidence).
    • Postoperative bleeding represented the primary complication across all chemodectoma cases.
    • Younger age groups were disproportionately represented in the observed cases.

    Implications:

    • Clinical presentation, embryology, and pathophysiology of chemodectomas are discussed.
    • Management decisions for chemodectomas necessitate careful consideration of surgical risks versus benefits.
    • Further research into optimizing treatment strategies for chemodectomas is warranted.
