Ankle Joint01:10

Ankle Joint

The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Existing patient selection criteria for total ankle replacement (TAR) are conservative.
  • Limited comparative studies exist between different TAR designs.
  • Surgeons rely on scarce data and industry materials for decision-making.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine controversial issues in total ankle replacement.
  • To provide recommendations for TAR procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of existing studies on total ankle replacement.
  • Analysis of current guidelines and industry-sponsored data.
  • Discussion of controversial topics in TAR.

Main Results:

  • Current TAR guidelines are overly conservative.
  • Lack of direct comparative studies hinders evidence-based selection.
  • Industry influence may affect surgeon's opinions.

Conclusions:

  • Revising TAR guidelines is necessary.
  • Further independent comparative studies are needed.
  • Critical evaluation of all available data is essential for optimal patient selection.
