Summary

Ferrara rings (FR) implantation effectively improved vision in patients with keratoconus. This safe and feasible surgical treatment enhanced visual acuity and reduced refractive errors in mild-moderate cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Ferrara rings (FR) implantation for treating keratoconus.
  • To assess visual and refractive outcomes after FR implantation.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective case series of 50 patients (79 eyes) with progressive keratoconus.
  • Surgical implantation of Ferrara rings.
  • Pre- and post-operative ophthalmologic examinations.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvement in uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best spectacle corrected visual acuity (BSCVA).
  • Significant reduction in spherical equivalent (SE) and keratometric readings.
  • Positive visual outcomes observed in all treated eyes.

Conclusions:

  • Ferrara rings implantation is a safe and feasible treatment for mild-moderate keratoconus.
  • The procedure offers improved visual outcomes, especially for contact lens-intolerant patients.
