Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication.
  • Its efficacy in treating refractory schizophrenia is well-established.
  • Potential side effects require ongoing monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a previously undocumented side effect of clozapine treatment.
  • To inform clinicians about potential weight gain associated with clozapine.

Main Methods:

  • Observational study of patients receiving clozapine.
  • Documentation of weight changes during treatment.

Main Results:

  • Six out of seven patients experienced substantial weight gain, ranging from 6 to 69 pounds.
  • This weight gain was not previously reported in medical literature.

Conclusions:

  • Clinicians should be vigilant for significant weight gain in patients treated with clozapine.
  • Anticipated increased use of clozapine necessitates awareness of this adverse effect.
